Everything You Need to Know about India’s National Strategy for Standardization

The Indian National Strategy for Standardization (INSS) was released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on June 19, 2018. Aligned with the government’s focus to enhance the ‘Brand India’ label, the Strategy Paper seeks to balance a “robust quality ecosystem in India” with a harmonised, dynamic and mature standards framework.

The Strategy Paper addresses four broad pillars of the Quality Ecosystem which include:

1. Standards development

2. Conformity assessment and accreditation

3. Technical regulations and SPS measures

4. Awareness and education

The Strategy Paper is the result of a broad consensus arrived over consultations from 2014 to 2017 through national and regional standards conclaves that attracted wide participation of experts and stakeholders from union and state governments, industry, regulatory bodies, national and overseas standards and conformity assessment bodies, academics, and international forums.
