Our Team

Michael has supported the Interel Group as Senior Advisor since 2015. As a national and international civil servant, he covered a broad spectrum of global development issues in several strategically relevant positions. With the German Foreign Office, he was development counsellor in the German Embassy in Tanzania and Alternate Permanent Representative in the German Permanent Mission in Rome. He also worked with the World Bank and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). In the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, he was in charge of the creation of a comprehensive advisory service for the private sector in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In his capacity as Chief of Protocol and special advisor, he worked closely with the Minister for Development Cooperation. Soon after the German reunification, Michael Bauer initiated the North-South Centre in the former capital Bonn and played a key role in internationally promoting the city as an attractive location for UN organisations (compensation for the move of the Government to Berlin). As Executive Director in the Board of the African Development Bank, he represented Germany, UK, the Netherlands and Portugal from 1999 to 2002 and actively contributed to the reform of the AfDB. Then he became Director of the Joint Africa Institute, a trilateral initiative of the IMF, the World Bank and the AfDB.
In 2012, the German Government increased its focus on agricultural development and nominated him as a member of the Board of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Michael Bauer also served in the Board of the World Food Program (WFP). Since his retirement in 2014, he continued to support IFAD through his high level network in the German Government and relevant international organisations on a voluntary basis.
