In order to ensure that the voice of the orthopaedic and traumatology community was heard in the EU institutions, and become a recognised contributor to the promotion of healthy ageing and mobility in Europe, EFORT, the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, needed a presence and voice in Brussels.
How we helped: We conducted a stakeholder audit and constructed a programme of engagement with key EU officials and influencers to ensure that orthopaedic and traumatology surgeons can make their views heard in the context of policy development. Through regular contact programmes and representation at key policy dialogues, EFORT has significantly improved its visibility amongst the media and EU decision-makers. In addition we have supported EFORT in the organisation of three political symposia on healthy aging and the role of musculoskeletal conditions in the chronic disease debate.
These activities led to EFORT becoming an official member of the European Year 2012 Coalition on Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. EFORT was also invited to collaborate with the European Commission on actions related to the Innovation Partnership, and with key health stakeholders including AGE, CPME, and the Fit for Work Coalition. In addition, EFORT has joined with EULAR to create the European Musculoskeletal Health Alliance.
